Cigarettes are products consumed through smoking and manufactured out of cured and finely cut tobacco leaves. Cigarettes are also made with reconstituted tobacco that is often combined with other additives and then rolled or stuffed into a paper-wrapped cylinder. A cigarette is ignited at one end and allowed to burn for the purpose of inhaling its smoke from the other side. It usually has a filter that can also be flavored with menthol or other flavors, but there are cigarettes without filters. Cigarettes with filters are called filtered cigarettes. Those that have a menthol flavored filter are called by the brand and followed by Menthols. There are a multitude of accessories for those that smoke. They include cigarette cases, cigarette holders, lighters and ashtrays. There are even electronic cigarette odor eliminators and smoke odor eliminating candles.

Nicotine is the primary chemical in tobacco that is addictive. Some are even branded by their level of nicotine. Lights are cigarettes with less nicotine and regular have more. Rates of cigarette smoking vary widely. While rates of smoking have leveled off or declined in many countries, they continue to rise in others. A cigarette is distinguished from a cigar by its smaller size, the use of processed tobacco leaves and its paper wrapping. Cigars are typically composed entirely of tobacco and do not include additives or paper.

Most countries have a legal smoking age of 18. Five exceptions are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands and Portugal where the age is 16. Japan is one of the highest tobacco-consuming nations and requires purchasers to be 20 years of age. In Egypt it is legal to purchase and smoke cigarettes and tobacco products regardless of the age. Approximately 5.5 trillion cigarettes are produced yearly throughout the world and are smoked by over 1.1 billion people.
